Why Carbon Verification

Outstanding Value for Money. By Design.

Carbon Verification Limited delivers faster, sharper, lower-cost independent GHG verification — not as a discount or a downgrade, but as the structural consequence of how the practice is set up to operate. Four structural drivers. Five outcomes for clients.

The Four Structural Drivers

Why We Cost Less, Move Faster, and Audit Sharper

Outstanding value for money in independent GHG verification is not a discount, a downgrade, or a marketing position. It is the structural consequence of four deliberate choices about how this practice is configured. None of them is rhetorical. Each one has direct consequences for what clients pay, how long engagements take, and how rigorous the audit actually is.

Driver 1

A Single-Discipline Practice

Independent GHG verification is our entire practice. There is no consultancy arm, no software product, no certification network, no competing scheme to subsidise. Every member of the team, every hour of training, every procedure we operate is built around one discipline: verifying corporate greenhouse gas inventories against ISO 14064-3.

That focus has two consequences. We do the work efficiently because we have done nothing else for two decades. And we do not need to charge clients for activities that do not serve them.

What this delivers: lower fees, sharper engagement, no padded scope.

Driver 2

Remote-First Verification Methodology

Our verification programme operates under ISO 14064-5:2026, the international standard governing remote verification. Site assessment is undertaken where it adds substantive evidential value to the audit; it is not a default.

For most corporate engagements, the evidential heart of verification — interrogating data sources, testing calculations, examining boundary decisions, cross-referencing supplier records — is conducted at least as thoroughly remotely as it ever was on site. Travel cost vanishes. Engagement duration shortens. Audit rigour does not.

What this delivers: faster engagement, lower cost, no compromise on evidence.

Driver 3

Twenty Years of Practice Depth

Carbon Verification Limited has been verifying corporate GHG inventories for nearly twenty years, across 23 economic sectors. FTSE-listed financial institutions. NHS trusts. Police forces. Local authorities. International humanitarian operations. Manufacturing groups across multiple continents.

We have seen, in working detail, where corporate inventories misstate emissions: where boundary decisions go wrong, where Scope 3 categorisation drifts, where emission factors are misapplied, where market-based Scope 2 double-counts. Experience compresses time on engagement because we know where to look first and what to ignore.

What this delivers: faster diagnosis, fewer iterations, sharper focus on issues that matter.

Driver 4

Free of Compliance-Market Overhead

We do not operate in the mandatory compliance market — UK ETS, CORSIA — and we do not carry UKAS accreditation, which is, in commercial terms, a compliance-market instrument. The costs of accreditation must be recovered from clients somewhere: UKAS fees themselves, internal preparation overhead, the time clients spend hosting witness audits, and the structural distortion of verification work towards procedures that satisfy a UKAS assessor’s checklist rather than the client’s reporting need.

Voluntary-market clients should not pay for compliance-market infrastructure that does not serve them. We have chosen not to pass that cost on. Our position on UKAS accreditation in detail →

What this delivers: lower fees, undivided attention, no surveillance disruption.

What This Delivers

Five Outcomes for Clients

The four structural drivers translate into five concrete outcomes. None of them is unique as a claim — every reputable verifier could assert them. The difference is that ours are structural rather than aspirational, traceable directly to the four drivers above.

Speed

Engagement durations measured in days and weeks, not months. A single-site verification with clean, well-documented data can complete in under a week. Multi-entity, multi-country engagements proceed without the delays imposed by surveillance audits, scope-extension cycles or accreditation review schedules.

Efficiency

No redundant site visits. No witness-audit interruptions. No documentation overhead serving an external assessor’s checklist. Our entire operating model is configured to deliver verification, not to demonstrate verification capability to a regulator.

Accuracy

Twenty years of practice across 23 sectors means we know where corporate inventories typically err: boundary gaps, Scope 3 categorisation drift, emission factor misapplication, double-counting in market-based Scope 2, fugitive refrigerant under-reporting, energy attribute certificate matching errors. Experience improves what evidence we look for first.

Expertise

Every member of the team is a corporate GHG verification specialist. Not a sustainability consultant adding verification to a portfolio. Not an environmental management generalist. Not a financial auditor extending into climate work. A specialist verifier, trained against ISO 14066, current with the GHG Protocol revisions, and experienced across the methodologies that corporate inventories actually use.

Low Cost

Structurally lower fee base because we do not subsidise consultancy, do not maintain UKAS accreditation, do not amortise software development across our verification work, and do not travel to sites where remote audit serves the engagement better. Tailored fixed-fee quotations. No hourly-rate surprises.

Trade-Offs by Design

What We Trade to Be Specialists

The structural advantages above come from deliberate trade-offs. We are specialists, not generalists. There are kinds of work we do not do, and we are clear about what they are. Where a client genuinely needs work outside our scope, we say so and direct them appropriately.

Where we add value

  • Tick Icon Independent ISO 14064-3 verification of corporate GHG inventories
  • Tick Icon Verification against the GHG Protocol Corporate Standard, including the forthcoming AMI multi-statement framework
  • Tick Icon Full Scope 1, 2 and 3 coverage across all 15 GHG Protocol Scope 3 categories
  • Tick Icon Multi-entity, multi-country corporate inventory verification
  • Tick Icon SECR, CDP, SBTi, CSRD, ISO 14068-1 and PPN 06/21 disclosure assurance
  • Tick Icon Pre-audit and de-risk engagements ahead of formal submission

What we send elsewhere

  • UK ETS or CORSIA verification — you need a UKAS-accredited body
  • Verra (VCS) or Gold Standard carbon credit project validation — registry-approved verifiers handle this
  • Building your GHG inventory — that is consultancy and would compromise our independence
  • Reduction strategy, net zero pathway design or target-setting advice — for the same reason
  • ISO 9001, ISO 14001 or other management system certification — we are not a multi-scheme certification body
  • Software-led emissions accounting — we verify what your team produces, regardless of platform

A specialist is not less. A specialist is configured to do one thing better than a generalist could. Our trade-offs are what make the four structural drivers possible. Without them, we would be just another verifier — with overhead to recover, conflicts to manage, and breadth to subsidise.
